TikTok Shop just did what Amazon did in 2017
Built a real Brand Registry
For seven years, Amazon's competitive moat over every other marketplace wasn't selection or logistics. It was the protection layer brands trusted.
The infrastructure that let a brand owner say "this listing isn't authorised" and have the platform act on it within hours.
Every other marketplace tried to copy it. Walmart's version is paperwork. Etsy's barely exists. Shopify outsourced it to the merchant. TikTok Shop, until this week, was the Wild West.
That changed with TikTok Real (link in the comments):
→ Brand verification before listings go live
→ Streamlined Notice and Takedown requests
→ Proactive detection on suspicious listings
→ 300+ IP experts feeding the model
→ 100 brands in the founding cohort
Here's the part most agencies will miss.
Amazon's Brand Registry wasn't really about counterfeits. The counterfeits were the wedge. The actual product was a trust contract between platform and brand — sign here, and we treat your IP like it matters.
That contract unlocked premium brand entry. That premium brand entry unlocked premium ad spend. That ad spend funded a decade of Amazon Ads dominance.
TikTok just signed the same contract.
The brands that read this as a counterfeit story will treat it as a legal task. The brands that read it as a marketplace-maturity signal will treat it as a strategic decision about which channel deserves the next budget cycle.
The window where TikTok Shop felt risky to premium brand operators just narrowed.
