96% of CMOs say AI has transformed their marketing function end to end. 42% say they use it as an assistant on discrete tasks.

Same people, same survey. Boston Consulting Group (BCG)’s June report on 300 CMOs calls it the marketing transformation illusion: 43% now report more than $15M in AI investment, yet only about 8% run campaigns with multiple agents operating autonomously.

BCG asked the CMOs. In April, we asked the people doing the work. Skai surveyed 332 paid media practitioners on how ready their teams are for agents, the kind of AI that takes action on campaigns, not just answers questions. 79% sit below our “Building” tier. 3% have AI embedded in routine workflows at scale. Out of 332, one described a team running autonomous agents with oversight.

The pattern matches. Teams scored highest on attitude and willingness to change (46.5 out of 100). They scored lowest on what agents actually need: ready assets (30.0) and a redesigned operating model (26.5). Eagerness is ahead of the build.

Harvard Business Review's May piece comes at it from the org chart. Marketing executives and a Harvard Business School AI Institute fellow argue that marketing still runs sequentially and in silos, and that the fix starts with a “brand code,” a machine-readable record of brand strategy, customer insights and business rules. BCG calls its version a brand intelligence layer. We asked our respondents what knowledge lives only in people’s heads. One answer: “EVERYTHING. It’s all tribal knowledge. There isn’t a SOP storage anywhere.”

Three sources, three methods and the sentiment hasn’t moved.

Excitement is high. The system underneath isn’t built yet.

For marketers, that means the tool isn’t the hard part. Writing down what your brand knows, deciding what an agent can change, and naming who signs off is.
