OpenAI Just Had Two Big Announcements. Advertisers Still Need to Wait. A billion dollar annualized run rate. A new advertising partnership with Amazon Ads. Two headlines that make OpenAI's ad business look unstoppable. Dig into both and there's more to the story. The real message for advertisers right now is patience.

Start with the Amazon news. It's a pilot. A select group of US brands, invite based, no self serve. Delta Vacations is the only advertiser named publicly so far. Amazon handles the buying and campaign setup as a managed service, but OpenAI still controls where and how those ads actually appear inside ChatGPT, which means even the advertisers who get in don't have full control yet. Measurement is basic too, aggregated impressions, clicks, and cost metrics, with no granular attribution. For a channel built on closed loop measurement, that's a real gap, and it's part of why some early testers have come back underwhelmed.

Now put that next to the run rate number. A billion dollars annualized sounds big until you remember OpenAI told investors it expects $2.5 billion in actual revenue by year end. Getting there from here means Q4 alone needs to average more than six times the current monthly pace.

Here's what I'd actually take from both announcements together. OpenAI and Amazon are building this the deliberate way, pilot first, learn, then open it up. That's slower than the headlines suggest, but it's the responsible way to launch a new ad surface instead of flipping it on for everyone and breaking trust with weak measurement.

If you're watching this from the outside, the move right now isn't to chase access. It's to get your measurement plan ready so you're not scrambling when self serve actually opens.

Two big headlines. Same real story. Growing, promising, and not open for business yet.

This story still sits in the experiment, learn, and follow bucket. Being early usually means better access and better pricing, but it also means you need an appetite for testing. ChatGPT ads will drive sales. Ad spend will increase, it just might not happen as fast as originally planned. That's okay.
