Gatorade owns two thirds of the US sports drink market. Sixty years of coolers, sidelines, gas station fridges.
"AI is the new shelf space" is a line I've heard going around right now, and it's right.
The shelf fits three names, and it hands them to the brand the internet can explain, not the one that paid for the endcap. Retail media hasn't made its way in (yet).
I asked ChatGPT for the best electrolyte drink for someone who sweats through their shirt at the gym. Gatorade didn't come up. Not in the answer, not in the shopping carousel. The carousel opened with LMNT.
Asked it again for keto. Same result. LMNT first. Gatorade nowhere.
Ask the lazy version just "best electrolyte drink," no context and Gatorade finally turns up. Dead last, under LMNT, Liquid I.V., Nuun, and Pedialyte. It only vanishes completely when the question gets specific about a real need.
I ran it six different ways. Gatorade was never the top answer once. LMNT led four of them. Two-thirds of the aisle counts for nothing in a sentence with room for three names.
Go ask it yourself. Best electrolyte drink for someone who sweats. See whose
name comes back.
Gatorade isn't unique. I've seen this across hundreds of brands and hundreds of thousands of prompts.
This is indeed a new sort of shelf space.
