This just in: all those vendors selling you a "rank in ChatGPT" are basically selling you lottery results. (Hands up who's not surprised?)

People don't ask AI for products the same way twice. Two shoppers after the same thing phrase it completely differently. Same shopper on the second try, different answer.

A one-off prompt tells you almost nothing.

At Vektor10 we built Trace to track the topic, not the keyword. Under each topic sits a set of real, varied prompts (written how people actually ask). We run that set repeatedly and report how often your product shows up, with the sample size and a confidence band attached.

We don't report a rank in ChatGPT. That number is a lottery result. Anyone selling it is guessing.

Rand Fishkin and SparkToro ran roughly 3,000 prompts. AI answers almost never repeat. You get different brands, different order, different count every time.

Peec AI published their methodology this year and landed in the same place: semantic grouping by topic, segmented by buyer intent. Worth a read.
