Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy told shareholders last week that customers will pick a retailer's shopping agent over a horizontal one like ChatGPT. And...
He's probably right.
Jassy's argument is simple. Shoppers want four things: selection, price, fast
delivery, and someone they trust. Horizontal agents can maybe aggregate
selection. Amazon does all four. And it has your entire purchase history going
back a decade.
That's the part people keep underestimating.
Agentic commerce is about who has the data, the logistics, and the closed loop to actually fulfill what the agent recommends.
Amazon has all three. Nobody else is close.
Jassy said he's open to working with third-party agents but they need to "find a value exchange that makes sense for both parties." Translation: you can play in our ecosystem, on our terms.
This is how Amazon has always operated.
What's your take, does Amazon have the upper hand today?
