How the new Targeting Rules can make AMs and advertisers more efficient
With the launch of the new Rules tab in Campaign Manager, Amazon now offers the option to automate the entire keyword harvesting process. Typically, AMs spend a lot of time each week or every two weeks harvesting keywords and product targets from automatic campaigns and adding them to manual campaigns. Now, you can fully automate this process using Targeting Rules in Campaign Manager.
To set it up, select the ad group from your automatic campaign that you use for STR, then choose the KPI filters. You can apply multiple filters. For example, suppose you want to select keywords with a CVR (≤ 50%) and Clicks (= 25). You can apply both these filters together, or you could filter based on Sales or Orders. You can also select a date range of up to the last 65 days.
From the Add Target section, choose whether you want to add keywords or products, and then select the match type. The bid will default to the same as the selected ad group’s default bid in the automatic campaign, with the option to increase it. Currently, there is no option to decrease the bid, but hopefully Amazon will add this in the future. Finally, choose the manual ad group where you want to add these harvested keywords.
There are some conditions. For example, a rule can only apply to ad groups advertising a single product. Therefore, before setting up a rule, it is important to restructure your existing campaigns for both the source (where you harvest) and the destination (where you add) to ensure compatibility. Once structured properly, you can completely eliminate the time-consuming manual harvesting process.
AMs and advertisers who do not use external tools should take advantage of these rules to make their optimizations more strategic and remove lengthy manual tasks. We share these learnings with AMs hired through our Talenthub during our weekly learning calls.
