The post that's done best on here was five questions I'd ask if I joined your Amazon team tomorrow.
So, here's another five. This time for finance.
1. What do you think Amazon actually costs us, all in, as a % of sales?
2. Which deductions do you see that the commercial team never mention?
3. Is the ad spend in the Amazon P&L, or sat in a marketing budget somewhere else?
4. When did someone last check what we signed in the AVN against what's actually being taken?
5. If you could cut one Amazon cost tomorrow, which would it be?
Number 3 is my favourite.
When the ads live in a different budget, the Amazon channel looks healthier than it is, and marketing looks like it's spending money on nothing.
Both wrong, and usually both arguing about it.
Finance tend to know where the bodies are buried.
They just don't get asked, because nobody invites them to the Amazon meeting (and to be fair, they've got enough meetings).
