Every catalogue has a golden child. You know the one... The bestseller, the one

Every catalogue has a golden child.

You know the one... The bestseller, the one on the front of the deck, the one everyone talks about, the one nobody's allowed to criticise.

And every so often, when you run it at contribution margin level, the golden child turns out to be costing you money.

It's more common than you'd think.

Big volume hides a lot.

Add the ad spend it needs to stay on top, the promos, Amazon's terms, and suddenly your favourite product is the one eating the margin the rest of the range is making.

Nobody wants to be the one who says it in the meeting.

It's a bit like telling someone their baby's ugly...but I'd rather say it than watch a business pour more budget into a product that's going backwards every time it sells.

PS name the film..
