Everybody has a rule of thumb for negating an Amazon PPC search term.
"10 clicks with zero orders." "20 clicks." "$25 spent."
People used those rules of thumb for years because nobody wanted to calculate statistical significance by hand in a spreadsheet.
Today, AI can establish your statistical significance and your true conversion rate baseline across every portfolio and campaign type before you set a single threshold.
On the 11-portfolio apparel account I break down at the PPC Mastery Summit this week, average order value ranges from $15.78 on handkerchiefs to $79.32 on modal V-necks.
At a 25% target ACOS, one order's worth of ad spend (AOV x Target ACOS) is $3.94 on handkerchiefs and $19.83 on V-necks.
Instead of one arbitrary habit number, our 5:00 AM agent uses your true baseline to build two nightly negation rules per campaign type (Manual SP, Manual SB, and Auto SP):
1. Rule 1 is a statement about ODDS (3x Converting Clicks-Per-Order):
In this account, converting terms take 2.71 clicks per order on Manual SP and 1.68 clicks per order on Auto SP.
Once a search term reaches 3x your converting clicks-per-order with zero sales (8 clicks on Manual SP/SB, 5 clicks on Auto SP), there is a 95% statistical probability (1 - e^-3) that its true conversion rate is below your baseline.
2. Rule 2 is a statement about MONEY (1 Order's Worth of Spend at Target ACOS):
On Manual SP, average order value is $64.11, so at a 25% target ACOS, one order's worth of ad budget is $16.03 ($16.17 on SB, $12.13 on Auto SP). Any zero-order term that crosses that dollar line gets negated even if it has not hit 8 clicks yet.
Why you set both rules together:
A cheap click accumulates before it costs anything (caught by Rule 1).
An expensive click costs before it accumulates (caught by Rule 2).
(And if you want a softer first step before hard negation, add a Gentle Bid-Cut tier at 1.5x CPO = 3 to 4 zero-order clicks, while leaving brand and defensive campaigns out of automation altogether.)
