A couple of months ago, I was having one of those weeks as a working mom and founder.

My daughter had just started kindergarten, and I quickly realized that a 2:15 p.m. school pickup was not going to work with my schedule.

After interviewing several candidates, I finally found a "great" afternoon nanny. She was all set to start on Monday, which was perfect timing because I had a VP of Sales candidate flying into town for her final interview and my husband was out of town.

Fast forward to Monday at 1:40 p.m.

The interview was going incredibly well when I got a text from the nanny:

"Hey Laura, I've decided to take another job. I won't be coming today"

Yes. Twenty minutes before she was supposed to arrive. And 35 minutes before my daughter needed to be picked up from the bus stop.

So I did what working parents do. I improvised.

I explained the situation to my candidate, who graciously came along for the school pickup, met my daughter, and continued our conversation driving around in my car while my exhausted kindergartener promptly fell asleep in her carseat.

Not exactly the executive interview experience either of us had planned.

But in hindsight, you learn a lot about someone when things dont go according to plan.

And I'm thrilled to share that candidate was Kayla Kurtz, our new VP of Sales at Envision Horizons.

I recently wrote an opinion piece for Inc. Magazine about why founders who want to scale need to let go of the sales function sooner.

So I'm now taking my own advice

Kayla has now been with us for a month, and its been exciting to see her jump in, build relationships with the team, and bring fresh leadership to our next chapter of growth.

A special thank you to Steve Levitt and the team at 4D Executive Search for helping us find a wonderful new hire.

Welcome to Envision Horizons Kayla! And thank you for rolling with the chaos of entrepreneurship and motherhood before you'd even received an offer.
