Most sellers think Amazon rank is only about what happens on Amazon. Wrong.
External traffic, Google, TikTok, email, influencer links, sends real ranking signals. But not the way most people think.
Here's the key: Amazon credits external traffic differently than internal traffic. When a shopper clicks your Amazon Attribution link from a Google ad or TikTok bio, Amazon knows that traffic came from outside. They reward it because you're bringing new customers to the platform, not just competing for existing shoppers.
I've seen products jump 15-20 positions on target keywords within 2 weeks of running targeted external traffic campaigns. The ranking signal is disproportionately strong because Amazon is incentivized to reward sellers who bring fresh eyeballs.
But there's a catch. External traffic converts at roughly 40-60% the rate of internal Amazon traffic. The shopper didn't come to Amazon to buy, they were browsing TikTok or reading an email. So your CVR takes a hit.
The math still works if you do it right. Use Amazon Attribution links to get credit. Send traffic to keywords you're trying to rank on (not just your listing URL). And make sure your listing converts well enough that the lower CVR doesn't tank your ranking signal.
The best external sources for rank building in order: Google Shopping ads, email lists, influencer content with direct links. The worst: broad social media posts with no purchase intent. Those just dilute your CVR.
External traffic is an underused ranking lever. Use it intentionally, not randomly.
