Not all impressions are equal. The placement your ad lands in changes everything

Not all impressions are equal. The placement your ad lands in changes everything.
Average CVR by placement:
- Top of Search (TOS) → 20-30%+
- Rest of Search (ROS) → 12-18%
- Product Pages (PP) → 5-10%
- Off-Amazon (SD) → 1-3%
That's a 6x difference between TOS and product pages. Six times.
A keyword with 15% blended CVR might be converting at 28% on TOS and 6% on product pages. If Amazon shifts your impressions from TOS to PP, your blended CVR drops, ACoS spikes, and you think the keyword got worse. It didn't. Your placement mix shifted.
This is why blended metrics lie.
CTR tells a similar story. TOS: 0.8-2.0%+. ROS: 0.3-0.8%. PP: 0.1-0.4%. The compounding effect is brutal: TOS has higher CTR AND higher CVR. So the gap in actual sales per impression between TOS and product pages is massive.
Here's the kicker: sales from Top of Search also send stronger ranking signals than other placements. So TOS wins aren't just more profitable, they're more valuable for organic growth.
I ran this analysis for a 7-figure brand last year. They thought their best keyword was dying. Reality: Amazon had shifted 40% of their impressions from TOS to product pages over two months. Same keyword, same bid, totally different results.
Always break your campaign data by placement before making bid decisions. Always.
