One ChatGPT query can undo millions of dollars in brand marketing....
Envision Horizons recently commissioned a consumer shopping journey survey. While we've long believed that discovery happens everywhere and transactions largely happen on Amazon, the rapid adoption of LLMs throughout the consumer journey is creating a significant opportunity, especially for challenger brands, that don't have massive brand awareness budgets.
One of the most compelling findings from our research is AI's growing influence on purchase decisions.
51% of AI-assisted shoppers have changed course after AI raised a red flag, abandoning a purchase or switching brands entirely.
This underscores the increasing importance of reputation management and digital presence. As AI platforms synthesize reviews, customer feedback, product information, and third-party content to generate recommendations, a brand's reputation is no longer evaluated solely by consumers.
For emerging brands, this shift presents a major opportunity. Consumers are increasingly willing to switch brands when AI identifies shortcomings in a competitor's offering, whether related to product performance, customer service, pricing, ingredients, or customer sentiment. Brands that understand where competitors are vulnerable can leverage those insights to strengthen their AEO strategy and increase visibility in AI-generated recommendations.
I've experienced this firsthand. After seeing an Instagram ad for a supplement, I asked ChatGPT whether the product's claims were legitimate. Based on concerns and negative feedback surfaced during that interaction, I decided not to purchase the product. As consumers increasingly turn to AI for validation before buying, these moments of influence will only become more common... and more impactful for brands.
