Currys has joined TikTok Shop, but how should established brands decide whether the channel makes commercial sense?
The retailer is trialling the platform to reach customers through product content, creators and live shopping. This is another example of established retailers exploring new ways to connect with shoppers, but brands need to weigh the commercial implications before investing in another sales channel.
TikTok Shop can create opportunities for product discovery and direct sales, although brands need to account for product margins, creator commissions, promotional costs, advertising, and the resources required to manage the channel. More sales do not necessarily translate into higher profit, particularly when the costs of generating those sales are not fully understood.
Brands also need to consider how TikTok Shop contributes to the wider business. Someone might discover a product on TikTok and then purchase it on Amazon or the brand's own website. If we measure only sales directly attributed to TikTok Shop, we may overlook some of its wider contribution.
At eCommerce Nurse, we assess how marketplace activity supports profitable, sustainable growth. Every channel needs a clear commercial purpose, and brands need to understand what they are investing in, what they expect to achieve, and how they will measure results.
I'm interested in seeing how Currys develops its TikTok Shop trial and what other retailers can learn from its experience.
How are you assessing the commercial opportunity on TikTok Shop? Are you measuring its wider contribution to the business as well as its directly attributable sales?
