Most people aren't struggling because they don't know how to prompt Claude.
They're simply choosing the wrong tool for the task.
Claude now offers three distinct ways to get work done.
But many still rely on Chat for everything, repeating and tweaking the same prompt several times when the output isn't what they expected.
The better question is not:
“How should I prompt Claude?”
It is:
“What must exist when Claude is finished?”
CHAT
Use it when the conversation is the work.
Questions, ideas, decisions, rewrites, and brainstorming.
You provide context. Claude gives you an answer, draft, or plan.
COWORK
Use it when the deliverable is the work.
Research, analysis, documents, presentations, and spreadsheets.
You define the outcome, provide the relevant files and guardrails, then review the finished work.
CODE
Use it when software is the work.
Features, bug fixes, scripts, tests, and automations.
You point Claude at the codebase. It edits files, runs commands, and verifies the result.
My simple rule:
Need an answer? Use Chat.
Need finished work? Use Cowork.
Need something that runs? Use Code.
The smartest Claude workflow is not using the most powerful mode every time.
It is choosing the lightest mode that can produce the outcome you need.
Save this before your next Claude session.
Then send it to the person still trying to do everything in Chat.
Which mode are you using most?
