"Gifts for dad" and "cordless drill" can sell the same product.

They are not the same shopper.

Late October is when gift searches start to climb.

"Stocking stuffers."

"Gifts for coworkers."

"Gifts for him under 50."

Those queries will land in your existing campaigns whether you planned for them or not.

That is the problem.

A tools brand we manage let gift terms run inside their product-term campaigns last year.

Product-intent terms converted at 12.4%.

Gift-intent terms converted at 5.1%.

Blended, the campaign drifted to 8.6%, and the bid automation pulled bids down on everything.

The drill terms that were working lost impression share.

The gift terms kept spending.

The worst of both.

The two shoppers want different things.

The product shopper knows what they need and is comparing specs.

The gift shopper is browsing a category they do not use, comparing ideas, and worrying about delivery dates.

Different CVR.

Different price sensitivity.

Different question in their head.

So we split them before the ramp:

→ A separate gift campaign, built from gift and occasion terms, with its own bids

→ Gift terms added as negatives in the product campaigns so that data stays clean

→ Sponsored Brands creative that answers the gift question: who it is for, why it feels like a gift, will it arrive

→ Gift-ready SKUs only: sets, bundles, giftable price points

→ An end date tied to your delivery cutoff, not December 31

On the tools account, product-term CVR held at 12% through November because gift traffic was no longer diluting it.

Gift campaign CVR started at 5% and climbed to 7.3% once the creative answered "who is this for."

Two campaigns.

Two scorecards.

No blended number lying to the bid algorithm.

The worst Q4 data is the average of two different shoppers.

It describes neither of them.

Split the gift terms this week, before they arrive in volume.

Then judge each shopper on its own number.
