It's Prime Day, and a big chunk of the supplement brands on Amazon have just dropped 50% across the board and called it their strategy for the week. I get the reflex, but for a premium wellness brand a blanket 50% off usually isn't a promotion, it's more like a margin donation with a deadline on it.
The reason it matters so much in this category specifically is that supplements live or die on repeat purchase. The whole model is that you acquire someone once and then retain them for months, so a deep one-off discount only really makes sense if it's buying something that compounds. That might be velocity that lifts your rank, reviews that bring down the cost of every sale after, or a first order from someone who comes back and reorders at full price. Attach none of that and all you've really done is teach your best customers to wait for the next sale, whilst handing Amazon a margin hit for a spike that's flat again by Friday.
The brands that get Prime Day right treat the discount as a lever rather than a gift. They pick the two or three ASINs where extra velocity genuinely moves rank, they make sure the listing actually converts before they pour traffic onto it, and they plan the price hold for afterwards so the algorithm keeps the gains instead of quietly handing them back.
Premium doesn't mean you never discount. It just means knowing exactly what each discount is buying you, and if the only honest answer to that is "because it's Prime Day", it's worth a longer think before the next one.
