Amazon's SKU Economics Dashboard: Powerful Tool, Critical Gap
I've been testing Amazon's new SKU Economics Dashboard before its official Accelerate announcement, and it's a significant step forward for seller profitability analysis. The visibility into individual SKU fees, fulfillment costs, and unit economics is incredibly valuable.
However, there's a major limitation: the dashboard only captures Sponsored Products spend, completely missing Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Display costs. For many sellers, this could mean thousands of dollars in advertising spend going unaccounted for in profitability calculations.
Two additional challenges:
Sellers remain hesitant to input COGS directly into Amazon's system
Without complete ad spend data, profit margins appear artificially inflated
The Solution: To get true SKU profitability, you need to combine:
Amazon's SKU Economics data
Complete ASIN-level ad spend (from tools like MixShift)
Your actual COGS
I've been building custom dashboards that merge these data sources, creating comprehensive profitability analysis that accounts for ALL advertising costs. The results often reveal dramatically different profit margins than Amazon's dashboard suggests.
For one client, we discovered their "46% profit margin" from the sku economic dashboard was actually closer to 7% when factoring in complete ad spend - a critical insight for scaling decisions.
Bottom line: Amazon's SKU Economics Dashboard is a valuable starting point, but sellers need to layer in complete advertising data and maintain control over their COGS to make truly informed profitability decisions.
What's your experience with SKU-level profitability analysis? Are you accounting for all advertising spend?
