The day before speaking at Digital Shelf Summit, I had a fairly classic wardrobe crisis.

Nothing I owned felt right, I was nervous about getting on stage, and I'd left myself approximately 24 hours to sort it out.

So I went into Grace and Mabel, a lovely independent shop in Bristol, and explained my predicament.

The woman helping me asked when the event was.

"Tomorrow."

She immediately got to work finding something I'd feel great in, and was absolutely lovely about the whole thing.

There was something especially nice about that woman-to-woman understanding. She knew how much walking into that room feeling confident meant to me.

I left with a skirt I'm now obsessed with (I've barely stopped wearing it since) and a lot more confidence about the following day.

I spend a huge amount of my working life thinking about shoppers and customer experience, and it was such a lovely example of getting it right.

She understood the occasion, how I was feeling, and what I needed from the experience.

That's the sort of service people remember, and the reason I'll happily go back.
