Most soft coolers die in storage.

Not out on the water.

A soft cooler that survived a full season of boat ramps and tailgates can be ruined in one winter if it goes into the garage damp and zipped shut. Four habits before you put it away:

1. Wash the liner with warm water and a teaspoon of mild dish soap, then rinse twice. Skip bleach, which breaks down liner coatings over time.

2. Dry it open and upside down for a full 24 to 48 hours. Seams and zipper tracks hold moisture long after the liner feels dry.

3. Store it unzipped with a dry towel or a few silica packs inside so trapped air cannot turn into mildew.

4. Keep it off concrete and out of the attic. Cold slab moisture and 120 degree summer attics both age foam and fabric faster than any trip does.

What is the one step your crew always skips when packing gear away for winter?
