Amazon blocks AI agents while Walmart welcomes them with a red carpet.

Amazon is blocking AI agents from buying for shoppers while Walmart just launched an Agent Gateway to welcome them, and I can already feel the seventeen open tabs.

So I went through Walmart’s announcement and pulled out what matters for a brand, so you can skip the reading and keep your attention on the product.

Walmart’s Agent Gateway is an MCP server, which lets approved AI agents search Walmart’s online inventory and buy on a shopper’s behalf.

Starting next month, shoppers can create an Agent Profile for each agent, with approval on every purchase or a spending limit they choose.

Another good thing is that agents cannot access payment information, and Walmart’s returns process still applies when an agent buys something the shopper did not want.

To make this more relevant, demand is already showing up too, since Mark Zuckerberg said 25% of Meta’s Muse users have spent more than $200 on transactions through it, and Amazon is missing out on that spending for now.

None of this asks a brand to rebuild anything today, but it is worth knowing before the first agent order shows up in your dashboard.

Here is the short checklist I would run this week:

➡️ Review your Walmart item content so titles, attributes, and images are complete and accurate

➡️ Compare your Amazon and Walmart listings to confirm the product details match on both

➡️ Save Walmart’s agent terms and returns language where your customer service team can find it

Hopefully this decision will make the AI competition a little more interesting.
