🎬 The Retail Battle Royale - PART 2:

“Last time on The Retail Battle Royale...” (kudos if you "hear" these words 🖖 )

I talked about how AI is fundamentally changing the way consumers comparison shop, and why brands risk becoming completely invisible if their product detail pages aren’t ready for AI scraping.

But looking ahead, how do we as e-commerce advertisers adapt to this new landscape without losing our grip on immediate performance?

It’s easy to stay in the comfort zone of traditional paid placements. Putting $1 into a sponsored product slot and tracking a direct return in the dashboard is highly measurable. But relying only on that one lever as AI grows is a fast track to getting left behind.

👊 So how do we stay in the fight? Here’s where I’d focus:

1. Every quarter, the bidding war gets a little more expensive. Ad Badger’s benchmark study puts the average Amazon CPC at $1.22, and it keeps creeping up. I’m not saying stop running ads (I’d be out of a job). I’m saying build organic discovery equity, so rising click costs don’t eat your whole margin.

2. The match starts before the search bar. PYMNTS found nearly 61 million U.S. shoppers now start their retail research with an AI assistant, not a search bar. Go back to my headphones. If I ask AI for the best heavy-duty pair and your brand isn’t in the answer? Bid all you want on Amazon. I already made up my mind.

3. One upgrade, two wins. This isn’t either/or. AI tools look for trust signals: clean bullets, structured product data, and consistent reviews. Guess what else those fix? Your paid conversion rate. One round of listing work powers up both sides of the board.

So, back to my question from last time: am I just getting the products optimized for AI? Good AI optimization isn’t gaming the system. It’s giving the shopper (and the bot) clear, accurate info.

At BTR, we manage Sponsored Ads and display across Amazon, Walmart and beyond. Every dollar there works harder when the PDP behind it is built to convert, and now built to be found by AI.

Stop treating AI optimization like a sci-fi experiment for the distant future. It’s an active shift happening right now.

We don’t just need to fund the ad platforms anymore. We need to feed the algorithm.
