Amazon took an AI company to federal court for helping people buy things on Amazon.

That company was Perplexity.

▶ Its Comet browser let customers use AI to shop on their behalf.

▶ Customers gave permission. Amazon argued the agent wasn't authorized to access its platform.

▶ Amazon won a preliminary ban in March. An appeals court overturned it in August.

▶ Amazon asked for a rehearing. Denied in September. Perplexity won that round.

The lawsuit continues. And it's not just Perplexity.

In September, Amazon also blocked Meta's Muse AI shopping agent.

Meanwhile, Amazon's own "Buy for Me" can purchase select products from participating brands' websites.

See what's happening here?

Amazon doesn't want to become just another store an AI agent visits.

It wants to be the AI shoppers ask first.

Here's something interesting we're seeing in ARTAN AI's client data:

So far in October, 7.2% of the sources Perplexity cites in its answers link to Amazon. For Claude, it's 23%.

That's citation data, not purchases. But it shows Amazon is already appearing in the information AI uses to answer product questions.

And for brands, there's an even bigger question:

What happens when AI recommends your competitor before a shopper ever sees your product? That's the real battle in Agentic Commerce. And it's already happening.
