Designing for the Physical Shelf is a World Apart from the Digital Shelf.
The Digital Shelf is visually a completely different challenge:
1. Mobile-first
2. Radically smaller: 5% of the physical shelf in size
3. Moving, not static it gets scrolled
4. Vertical scrolling, not horizontal panning.
5. More demanding of good contrast.
6. Destroys thin, delicate typefaces
7. Obscures small decorative details
8. Gets a 300-millisecond glance
9. Powered the channel that is growing 5-10x faster than in-store
10. Of greater importance on reach and influence than the physical shelf.
So I'll ask: how are your heroes?
Are they glance-readable on mobile?
Or are you still designing for only the instore experience?
