Seller Central showed the new UPC but Amazon still rejected the update. A seller

Seller Central showed the new UPC but Amazon still rejected the update.
A seller we worked with swapped an old UPC for a newly registered one on a live ASIN; the listing showed the new number, and as you can imagine, a Matching Error appeared anyway, pointing at the very correction they had just made.
The thing is, what Seller Central shows you is only part of the picture, while the matching engine (if we can call it that) reads a backend record that can keep a reference to the retired UPC long after the visible field has moved on.
Nobody remembers enrolling in a course on ghost data, and yet there we are, editing the same field a third time and hoping it behaves differently.
So we worked this one through, and the order of the steps mattered more than any single one of them, so be sure to read the full case.
Because what we often do as sellers is repeat and retry the edit, but it almost never works since the conflict lives deeper inside Amazon, and fixing it requires the right steps and, more importantly, hitting them in the exact sequence the catalog engine expects.
We mapped out the precise, step-by-step sequence to clear the backend conflict and force Amazon to accept the update (including the exact case copy we used to get it approved).
The full breakdown, including the case copy we used for both requests, is in this weeks OSS Lab: https://lnkd.in/ei9raEpY
Hope this saves you a few of those seventeen open tabs.
