Nobody actually decided to do that.
It happens by drift. The first fifty products go up. A new line launches and someone adds it. A retailer exclusive appears because it sat in the feed.
Four years later you have several hundred ASINs and no view of which ones matter.
Here is what that costs.
Every listing needs images, copy and keywords. Every listing raises cases when something breaks.
Most of them sell almost nothing.
The range that works in a supermarket is not the range that works on Amazon. Different shopper. Different reason to buy.

This is the first stage of Amazon maturity and most brands skip it. They move straight to ads and content, spread across a range nobody chose.
Try this instead. Pull twelve months of sales by ASIN. Find the products doing real volume. Ask what changes if the top fifty get all of the attention.
The answer is usually quite a lot.
Amazon does not reward a big catalogue. It rewards products people choose.
