Too many brands still plan social media like all impressions are created equal

-- Where can we get the most reach?

-- Where is the CPM most efficient?

-- Where can we hit the audience one more time?

Those questions matter, but they over-look something important ... the cultural relevance of the platform itself

#Advertising on a platform consumers feel deep affinity for and see as connected to their identity, values and beliefs is not the same as advertising on a platform they see as purely functional and less central to their identity

Context matters .... a lot

It’s the difference between being seen at the lunch table with the cool kids versus sitting with the teacher monitoring the cafeteria. ... You're technically in the same room, but how you're perceived is different

That’s why Collage Group's new Cultural Performance Matrix for Social #Media is so interesting

When we map platforms by cultural fluency and momentum, we see #socialmedia platforms separate on a different dimension than pure reach

For example, YouTube stands apart as the platform that's most universally-relevant across consumers of all ages, races, sexual identifies and parents of kids

Instagram and TikTok feel current and trend-forward, but their cultural relevance is less universal than Youtube's

Pinterest and Reddit, Inc. connect meaningfully with some consumer cohorts, but aren't generating the same "buzz" as Instagram and TikTok

And several platforms, including LinkedIn operate more as utilities than cultural engines ... though that will likely change as the platform invites more outside celebrities and influences in to create conte nt

SO ... what the implication for advertisers and #mediaplanning?

Platform choice sends a signal

It affects how your brand is received, how much permission you have to show up and whether your message feels native to the cultural environment or awkwardly inserted into it.

The smartest advertisers don’t just ask, “Can we reach our audience here?”

They ask, “Does this platform still mean something to the people we’re trying to reach?”

🌟 Reach X (Cultural) Relevance = Maximum Impact
