As I've been living in Claude Code every single day, I wanted to share handful of things have completely changed how productive I am with it. 🙂

- Context Window

Learning to manage this is what will take your output from slop to perfection

Think of it as the 'attention span budget'.

I treat it like a resource I'm spending, and I almost never let it climb past 50%.

Most of the other points below somehow contribute to context management.

- Sub-agents

I use these mostly to protect the main context window.

Unlike Claude Cowork, you can scope MCPs, etc to a single subagent and keep your main thread clean.

If you use external resources heavily but not consistently, you can keep a cleaner context by not reading in all the MCP details for every session.

- Git Worktrees

Critical for if you plan on wokring on multiple projects at once in the same codebase.

This allows each instance of Claude Code to work in its own branch.

I can't imagine being a power-user without these...

- Slash Commands

My entire product pipeline cycle is built around them.

If you have workflows/processes that you often repeat, use these instead of adding details to CLAUDE.md, since they are not read into context until invoked.

More on this in a future post.

- Supporting Markdown Structure

This directly dovetails into context window - keeping a very slim CLAUDE.md that points at multiple directories with supporting markdown files/docs for a given type of task.

I built a genuinely strong AMC query generator on top of this that I will be breaking down in a future post too.

- CMUX

This termianl makes running multiple instances of Claude Code 10x easier.

One place for all instances.

Provides visibility into model, worktree, branch, and context window %, and flipping between the main agent and subagents in one view.

Plus, it makes a nice 'ding' sounds when an instance needs your input. 😀

- CLIs

The two I use most often are AWS and GCP for dev-ops work.

- VS Code with Source Control

The two windows I have open at all times are VSCode and CMUX

Accountability matters. This lets the people who *actually know how to code* the ability to review a clean, well-organized diff.

Claude Code is great, but the ability to see what it is generating is what keeps the 'vide-coded AI-slop' out of the codebase...

None of these are magic on their own, but combined, they're the difference between using Claude Code and actually being a power user with it.
