I got the SmartScout MCP adapter out in one night.

Then the real work started.....

Claude ran a smoke test and kicked back 11 / 13 passing.

Pretty solid for a first pass — but the failed pieces were exactly the kind of things that matter when agents are using the data:

Silent filter no-ops.

Sort fields needing validation.

Product history timing out.

So I pushed a fix:

- added client-side validation for bad filter keys

- added validation for bad `sort_by` values

- increased timeout for `smartscout_get_product_history`

- updated unit tests

- added a README note that product history appears to return full history even when `page_size` is supplied

This is one thing I’m learning fast with MCP adapters:

Not all adapters are the same.

Getting an API connected is the easy part.

Getting it reliable enough for an agent to use without creating confidently wrong analysis is the real work.

Filters need to fail loudly.

Sorts need guardrails.

Timeouts need to be handled.

Docs need to call out weird API behavior.

That’s the difference between “it runs” and “I can trust it.”

Build fast.

Smoke test hard.

Tighten the adapter.

Helm Connection next.
