The sexiest keyword in your category is probably killing your margins.
Designer Wellness figured that out.
They're growing 30% YoY on Amazon. In most categories? That's a win.
But protein is an $80M per month category.
30% YOY growth keeps the lights on. The ceiling's way higher.
And they're not trying to outspend the big boys to get there.
They stopped chasing the sexy keywords and started dominating the boring ones.
"Protein smoothie" isn't going to turn heads in a strategy meeting.
But it's a strong New-to-Brand query with way less competition.
They took 5-6% of all category conversions on that term.
Got them their Top 3 ranking.
One boring/moderate traffic keyword won't carry you. But 10 of them will.
Here's what I would do if I was running Designer Wellness' Amazon:
1. Pull the Search Term Report (last 60-90 days)
2. Filter for non-branded terms with high conversion rates
3. Sort by Search Frequency Rank - lowest to highest
4. Find terms where you convert well but barely spend
Those are your breakout opportunities.
The goal? Find 10 keywords you can actually own.
It's a smaller piece of a very big pie. But it's a piece you can take.
Stop throwing money into the meat grinder of high-CPC head terms.
Efficiency over ego (all for the sake of profitability).
That's one of the few ways to continue scaling profitably. π
P.S. - Paul Pruett, Matt Grimm π, Kate Kennedy this is a solid foundation. Lots of room to run with it.
Could be fun to compare notes sometime, I have a feeling there's even more in the data.
