"Mindful Moderation" is the new mode of American drinking habits - and it's rewriting the Alc Bev growth playbook. 🍺 🍷

4 in 10 Americans of legal drinking age are now consuming less alcohol, according to Collage Group

But rather than abstaining from alcohol entirely, many are taking a philosophy of balance and being more intentional about when they drink

This fundamentally changes how Alc brands must "fit" in consumer lives.

🌟 Who's leading the Mindful Moderation charge?

Gen Z are the most moderate drinkers:

• 62% say they drink less than once a week

• vs Millennials (45%), Gen X (51%) and Boomers (55%)

Interestingly, when Gen Z does drink they tend to consume more per occasion.

• 41% of Gen Z report having 3 or 4 drinks per occasion

• vs. Millennials (35%), Gen X (27%), and Boomers (17%)

💡 Why are they cutting back?

Across the board, the top motivations are:

• Saving money (56%)

• Improving physical health (43%)

However, Gen Z is uniquely focused on mental health, with 40% citing it as a top reason for drinking less.

🛒 What are they looking for?

1 in 4 Americans want options that fit a wellness lifestyle:

• Lower proof

• Lower sugar

• Clean ingredients

• Transparent labeling

• Elevated, not syrupy

🏠 The "Stay-In" Shift:

86% prefer drinking at home with friends over going out.

Financial pressure + digital burnout = the rise of intimate, aesthetic dinner parties. Slow consumption. Smaller gatherings. Higher standards.

The Takeaway:

The old mantra was: more. The new mantra is: better.

Brands that win will:

• Lean into low-proof RTDs

• Emphasize presence over excess

• Market how you’ll feel the next morning — not just the buzz!
