LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN: I'm working on a couple of super technical AEO/SEO roles with a B2B client in Dallas.

Jobs are on-site. Period.

So I email a candidate who's really great. I’ve worked with her before, and she’s a legit SEO rockstar.

Turns out, she's now in Tennessee and can't relo to Dallas, and she says as much in a Loom response to my note.

Then …

After politely saying thanks-but-no-thanks (30 seconds), she proceeds to proffer a ton of OUTSTANDING feedback on both roles in her 5-minute video.

— why the roles should be rethought

— what my client’s options are

— what other firms in the category are doing

— how AI is evolving SEO

— how the positions might run afoul of each other as they are currently designed

— and so forth

All very friendly. Very professional. Very complete. Very accurate.

In her video, it’s crystal clear that she's nice / professional / smart and can DO the hell out of the job remotely.

She’s not at all salesy. She’s just being helpful. But in the process, she telegraphs that she’s the exact person for whom the job was spec’d.

Naturally, I sent her Loom video to my client, who was blown away.

If my client decides to open the job up to work remote, this candidate will be the first person we reach out to.

🟥 KEY TAKEAWAY: Send Loom videos! Market yourself more aggressively without being salesy. It’s very possible to do this. I do it all the time. Just be helpful, for heaven’s sake.

Give people permission to follow up with you. Give them a REASON to like you. Give them a REASON to feel low-key obligated to keep you in the loop regarding next steps. “One good turn deserves another,” etc.

🟥 NET/NET: Leave the door open!

Very few people do that. People complain about how bad the job market is, but the fact is, they do a really shitty job of marketing themselves.

DON’T BE THAT GUY/GAL.
