Most CPG brand teams are paying agencies premium retainers to grade their own homework.
L'ORÉAL are supposed to be "the leader" in digital commerce content but their Amazon PDP secondary images are often not glance readable proven by Rhino.
When asked if digital shelf assets are tested for glance readability, the answer is almost always:
"Our agency handles that. We trust them."
Trust without verification is not a strategy. It is an unforced conversion leak.
Here is what "our agency handles that" usually looks like in practice:
A designer reviews their secondary image enlarged on a 32-inch colour-calibrated monitor. The brand team does the same.
They declare it "gorgeous", and export to the DAM.
No mobile stress testing.
No small-screen contrast validation.
Zero objective proof that a shopper scrolling on a iPhone can decode the benefits on this secondary image.
Eyeballing is not testing.
If your agency claims they test for accessibility and readability, ask them two questions:
1. Are you still using WCAG 2 contrast ratios?
WCAG 2 was built for print decades ago, not modern mobile screens. Independent testing proves 47% of colour pairs that pass WCAG 2 should fail on visual contrast, while 23% that fail should actually pass. If they are not testing with APCA (WCAG 3), half their passes are false confidence.
2. How are you measuring stroke weight against font size?
Font height alone tells you almost nothing. Cambridge University visual clarity research proves stroke width and letter silhouette (avoid ALL CAPS) determine whether text holds up when scaled down to a 60mm secondary image on a mobile.
Your PDP carousel images are meant to deliver reasons to buy.
If "visibly plump" cannot be glance-read during a thumb-flick, that claim never existed.
Unreadable is unbuyable.
How to fix the blind spot:
1. Audit your current shelf
Pull 50 live hero and carousel assets. Run them through RHINO testing. I am happy to get you 50 free credits.
2. Put an objective gate before the DAM
No asset enters your DAM on agency opinion. If it fails glance-readability thresholds, it goes back for revision before a single media dollar is spent.
3. Demand verified standards in the master brief.
Make RHINO readability pass rates a non-negotiable delivery criteria for every content partner.
Blind trust is comfortable.
Readability is measurable.
Readability Drives Revenue.
Do your agencies deliver objective readability data with their assets, or just creative confidence?
