When fashion enters music, sport, or technology the strongest partnerships are the ones that highlight and modify a category-defining object - in this case Fender's Telecaster Guitar.

To celebrate both Fender's and Paul Smith's 80th birthday, they worked on this limited edition Telecaster Made in Japan.

While Paul Smith is best known for his design language coming from England, even being synonymous with the pink store front in LA or his colorful stripe design, he is also heavily tied to Rock music due to him being a stylist for Rock icons as well as his music fashion collaborations.

This all culminated into how he brought that same perspective to the Telecaster, and why Fender specifically.

Look, I'm not a Rock fan, nor am I a musician. But I am a collector and this collab caught my attention.

I think a good sign of a well executed partnership is when someone outside of the immediate fan base takes notice and appreciates the work - without losing credibility from the community it was intended for.

Paul Smith's perspective almost forced me to not just look at the Telecaster as a guitar, but also as a cultural artifact with craftsmanship, history, and tie ins to multiple facets of culture behind it. The collaboration gave me a new entry point into a community I might've otherwise not noticed.

You never know when the right partnership might create a new fan, or a new niche community that others in your category haven't thought to engage.
