To get more out of ChatGPT, you need to guide how it thinks between different tasks.

Just like you’d brief a consultant differently for a quick update versus a full strategic plan.

ChatGPT has built-in reasoning modes. You just need to know how to use them.

1 - High Reasoning Mode

For strategic planning, complex evaluation, or innovative problem-solving.

Use these in your prompts:

✓ "Think comprehensively before answering"

✓ "Reason more systematically"

✓ "Conduct thorough evaluation first"

Actual prompt that works:

"You are my business advisor. Reason more systematically. Draft a 1-page strategy for [organization] to achieve [objective] within [timeline]."

2 - Minimal Reasoning Mode

For fast responses, brief overviews, or simple tasks.

Keep it direct:

✓ "Minimal reasoning needed"

✓ "Avoid lengthy explanations"

✓ "Provide solution immediately"

Pro prompt I use daily:

“Minimal reasoning. Create 5 email subject lines for [service] targeting [audience]. No explanations required.”

3 - Chain-of-Thought (CoT)

For step-by-step reasoning in one direction.

“Apply step-by-step reasoning: divide the challenge into stages, address each, then provide the final solution.”

Best for:

✓ Business challenges

✓ Performance reviews

✓ Planning content

4 - Tree-of-Thought (ToT)

Compares multiple pathways before choosing one.

"Generate at least 3 options. Weigh the advantages and drawbacks of each, then recommend the strongest choice and explain why."

Best for:

✓ Strategy development

✓ Investment decisions

✓ Creative solutions

5. The complete optimization framework:

1. Define the role ("You are a...")

2. Provide background (objective, audience, limitations)

3. Set reasoning approach (high/minimal/CoT/ToT)

4. Outline desired format (bullets, chart, plan)

5. Request changes ("Review this critically and improve")

Most people waste ChatGPT’s advanced capabilities.

Your prompt should guide the work, not guess it.

Match the reasoning level to your task.

Simple request = Minimal reasoning.

Strategic decision = High reasoning mode.

Comparing options = Tree-of-thought.

ChatGPT is powerful. Use it right.
