And just like that, everyone's Reddit AI search strategy changed overnight.
Reddit just told us what Google's AI answers are costing it, more than 1 million fewer search referrals per week, on average, in October.
On the Q3 call they also shared that US daily users dropped from 53.2M to 50.7M in one quarter, and warned the total could fall by a low double-digit percentage next quarter.

The way I read it, Google still reads Reddit every day. It just tells people what Reddit said, so they never walk in the door. It's like a friend reading the restaurant menu out loud to you, you still pick the dish, but the restaurant never sees you.
Another interesting part is that Reddit is making MORE money per user. US revenue per daily user went up 53% to $13.82. Logged-in users are worth more to advertisers, and a login wall makes scraping harder, which helps their AI licensing deals (that line grew 35% to $48M).
So what does this mean for B2B SEO and AI search plans for 2027? Three things I'm looking at with clients:
1. Citations and clicks are two different numbers. A Reddit thread can still shape what ChatGPT or AI Mode says about your category, even if nobody clicks through. If you only watch referral traffic, you'll think Reddit stopped working. Track mentions in AI answers separately.
2. Check how much of your visibility sits on someone else's land. If a big part of your AI presence comes from Reddit threads, ask what happens when they go behind a login. We don't know yet if AI tools will still be able to read them. Same question for G2, Quora, forums, and publishers.
3. Build on the land you own. Your site, your own research, your product docs, real expert posts with your name on them.

It's still a test, and nobody really knows how it will change AI retrieval, me included. But if your 2027 plan assumes Reddit stays an open library, I'd go back and check that assumption.
