ALEXA SPONSORED ADS

In August I shared a chart: how many distinct prompts Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping wrote for the Sponsored Products ads in the accounts we manage. By July it had climbed to nearly 1,500 a month.

Here is the same chart, three months on.

🔶 March: 269

🔶 July: 1,471

🔶 October: 2,802

Roughly ten times March. Nearly double July. And the count has risen every month since May. One honest note: the growth is concentrated. A few accounts produced more of September and October prompts.

Amazon is also still writing new questions. More than half of October’s prompts had never appeared in any earlier month.

A reminder of what these are. We do not choose them. We do not bid on them. Amazon writes the question a shopper might ask, and our ads either answer it or they don’t.

So the list of questions your listing has to answer keeps getting longer, and much of it changes every month.

Three checks for your own account:

→ Chart your own prompt count month by month since spring. Is it climbing like ours?

→ Read 20 of your newest prompts. How many does your listing answer clearly today? Which ones are wrong?

→ Note the questions your product page can’t answer. Those are where you lose the shopper.

Limitations: a prompt count tells you how many questions Amazon asked, not how many sales they drove. The chart counts active accounts only, so earlier months read slightly lower than in August.

The question I left you with in August still stands: if your listing had to answer the top 20 questions in your category, in a shopper’s words, how many could it answer?
