Waiting for motivation never works, researchers found it shows up after you start, not before. Here’s the trigger that actually works.

Researchers found an easy way to trigger the will to act, and it starts with finding a choice, almost any choice, that lets you feel like you're the one steering.

The specific decision matters less than the fact that you're the one making it.

If you're staring down a pile of emails, don't start at the top. Pick one from the middle instead.

If you're stuck on an assignment, skip the intro and write the conclusion first, or jump to whichever part interests you most.

Even choosing where a hard conversation happens, or what question opens a sales call, counts.

None of these choices change the actual task in front of you.

What they do is prove to your brain that you're still in control, and that feeling of self-determination is what gets you moving in the first place.

So next time you're waiting to feel motivated before starting something, stop waiting and make one small decision instead, even a meaningless one.

The motivation shows up right after, once you're already moving.
