Weglot asked for my worst translation nightmare this Halloween. I didn't have to

Weglot asked for my worst translation nightmare this Halloween.

I didn't have to dig very far. Our own brand name got translated. 🎃

We'd launched a French version of our landing page. Clean layout, sharp copy, the logo sitting at the top in English, exactly where it should be.

And right underneath it, in big confident letters: Flux d'Esprit.

Our name is two English words glued together. The translation split them up and translated both. “Stream of the mind.” Or, if you squint, “a flow of spirits.” Very on theme. Not remotely on brand. 👻

A reader spotted it before any of us did. One polite email, one screenshot. It had been live for most of a week.

Nobody did anything wrong, which was the scary part. There was simply no list of words that should never change.

So the one word that mattered most was the first one to go.

As someone who writes for a living, I obsess over every headline. I'd never once thought about protecting the name sitting above it.

The fix isn't fewer translations. It's giving the translation process the right context.

Speaking of that, you should check Weglot.

If your brand has words that should never change, it’s worth protecting them before your website learns the hard way.
