Why aren't more CPG venture capital funds run by people who've actually built and operated CPG brands?
Serious question.
I've been seeing all these "Founder-Friendly Investor" awards making the rounds lately.
First off, kudos to the funds being recognized. 👏
I applaud you, and I genuinely appreciate the capital, conviction, and support you bring to emerging brands trying to disrupt established industries.
We need more of you.
But the awards got me thinking about something I've been kicking around for years.
What if we built a CPG investment fund run BY operators, FOR operators?
Not just people who understand cap tables, valuations, and exit multiples.
People who've actually been in the trenches.
People who've dealt with production disasters, distributor chargebacks, retailer resets, blown forecasts, co-manufacturing headaches, cash flow crunches, and the thousand other things that can make or break a growing CPG brand.
People who know supply chain, manufacturing, retail, distribution, e-commerce, Amazon, finance, and consumer marketing because they've actually DONE the work.
Not just studied it in a deck.
Don't get me wrong. There are some outstanding investors in this space who bring tremendous value without having been operators themselves.
But I can't help wondering whether there's room for a different kind of fund.
One that doesn't just write checks and offer advice from the boardroom.
One that rolls up its sleeves and helps founders actually move the needle.
I've been thinking about starting something like this for a long time.
And the more I think about it, the more intrigued I become.
So, founder friends, I've got two questions:
1. Would you want an operator-led fund like this on your cap table?
2. What the hell should we call it? 😅
