WHY BUILD THE DESTINATION BRAND FIRST?
The strategic logic behind the Rewilding Africa National Park Conservancy model phase 1.
At Rewilding Africa CIC, we believe that protecting a national park requires us to look beyond its boundaries and consider the future of the wider landscape and the communities who call it home.
That is why our National Park Conservancy model begins with something different: the development and launch of a community-led destination brand.
Why start here?
🌍 1. ESTABLISH A SHARED VISION
A shared vision brings together diverse stakeholders: park authorities, communities, landowners, NGO’s, tourism operators, government and investors.
A jointly developed destination brand creates a common vision around which these stakeholders can collaborate, aligning their efforts towards a shared future.
The brand is more than a marketing identity. It becomes a framework for collective action.
💚 2. CONNECT CONSERVATION WITH ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY
A national park’s established reputation and conservation heritage are valuable destination assets.
By connecting these assets with surrounding communities, cultural heritage and landscapes, we can develop a broader tourism destination that creates opportunities for local enterprises, employment, skills development and responsible investment.
The objective is to build an economy in which community prosperity and a healthy natural environment reinforce one another.
🤝 3. PUT COMMUNITIES AT THE HEART OF THE DESTINATION
Communities should be recognised as essential partners in conservation, with opportunities to shape their future and participate meaningfully in the benefits of a destination brand that they own.
This is not about replacing statutory park authorities or compromising their responsibilities. It is about creating a collaborative framework in which communities, conservation and economic development work together.
🗺️ 4. CREATE A FOUNDATION FOR LAND-USE PLANNING
Our two-phase programme follows a deliberate sequence:
PHASE 1 - DESTINATION BRAND DEVELOPMENT & GLOBAL LAUNCH
Build the shared vision, align stakeholders, establish the destination identity, develop tourism partnerships and identify economic opportunities.
PHASE 2 - INTEGRATED LAND-USE PLANNING & IMPLEMENTATION
Translate that vision into a data-driven framework for sustainable land use, community development, ecological connectivity, appropriate investment and landscape restoration.
THE DESTINATION BRAND IS NOT THE END GOAL. IT IS THE CATALYST.
Our ambition is to help transform Africa’s national parks into the anchors of thriving, community-led conservation destinations, where nature-positive economic development and the protection of irreplaceable natural heritage go hand in hand.
A rewilded future begins with a shared vision.
What if every African national park had a thriving, community-led conservancy around it?
