Last week I promised to break down the 10 Quality Tests for Content for Commerce.

Here they are.

Compliance gets your content onto the digital shelf. Quality gives shoppers a reason to buy.

Too often, teams Confuse Content Completeness with Content Quality.

"Have we supplied required images? Populated the title & description? Met retailer specs?"

Checklists matter, but they only confirm content is acceptable to the platform. They say nothing about whether it works for the shopper.

A PDP can tick every compliance box and still leave shoppers confused:

- What is this product?

- Why choose it over the competition?

Compliance asks: "Did we upload what was required?"

Quality asks: "Did we make the choice effortless?"

Written & Visual assets must work together as one selling system for both humans & machines. Visuals make the product instantly recognisable, and win human shoppers' hearts & minds. Words make propositions explicit, answer questions, and provide credible reasons to believe and win machines' recommendations.

A beautiful-looking hero image cannot rescue an unanswered question.

Baymard usability research confirms descriptions must contextualise ambiguous imagery. GS1 guidelines explicitly warn against relying on titles alone; Tobii mobile eye-tracking proves shoppers largely ignore product titles.

Here is our Neem 10-point framework to test both:

VISUAL CONTENT QUALITY TESTS

1. Glance Readability on Mobile: Can shoppers decode Brand, Format, Variant, Size in split seconds? Read your Secondary images at 60mm size?

2. Cognitive Load: Does the image stay under 4 messages to avoid clutter?

3. Video Captions: Are captions hardcoded and formatted for sound-off mobile viewing?

4. Distinctive Brand Assets: Are core brand cues instantly prominent?

5. Visual Attention: Does the hierarchy guide the eye to the key benefit first?

WRITTEN CONTENT QUALITY TESTS

1. SEO: Are high-intent keywords placed for retail search algorithms?

2. GEO: Are FAQs and structured data optimized for LLMs and agentic commerce engines?

3. Claims: Are all product claims verifiable, compliant, and credible?

4. Grammar: Is syntax clean and professional?

5. Spelling: Are zero-error standards maintained across all copy?

Working with Neem, leading Content as a Service at Unilever, our program delivered 260,000 assets across 14 markets.

At that volume, the challenge is never creating one heroic page.

It is making quality repeatable & automated across thousands of SKUs.

Automated quality testing gives commercial teams a shared language & KPI's.

Glance-readability is critical, but winning the digital shelf for both humans and AI requires rigorous testing across all ten.

How many of these 10 tests are you doing to win your Digital Shelf? How many are KPI's?
