Amazon just told Meta's shopping agent to leave the store.
The same week, Walmart opened a door for those agents.
It's called the Agent Gateway, and approved agents like ChatGPT, Gemini and Muse can search and buy through it.
When you're number two online, you don't win by playing the leader's game. You try to change the game. If shoppers start buying through AI agents, the store that lets them in shows up in every answer. The one that blocks them doesn't.
And those agents go through Sparky, Walmart's own assistant, where Walmart Connect is already testing ads.
So is this Walmart's best shot at closing the gap with Amazon?
Or is Amazon right to keep its shelf to itself?
