We're using AI to make our Amazon business more profitable. But what if the technology we're relying on becomes a serious threat to humanity?
That's a conversation I think more business owners need to be having.
Some prominent figures in the AI industry have expressed concerns about the possibility of advanced AI causing catastrophic harm, including human extinction.
There have even been estimates suggesting that the risk could exceed 10%.
To be clear, those are estimates and opinions about an uncertain future, not established probabilities.
But the fact that people working closely with this technology are discussing those possibilities is worth paying attention to.
Here's why this matters to me.
We've generated over $90 million in Amazon sales, and AI is already an important part of how we operate.
We're using it to improve product development, increase efficiency, analyze opportunities, and strengthen our competitive position.
From a business perspective, the benefits are real.
And I believe entrepreneurs who understand how to use AI effectively will have significant opportunities.
But I also think we need to ask harder questions about where this technology is going.
How much risk is acceptable?
What safeguards should developers be responsible for?
Should governments regulate advanced AI systems?
And who has the technical expertise to make informed decisions about those regulations?
I don't pretend to have all the answers.
I know what AI is doing for our business today.
I also know that becoming more dependent on a technology makes understanding its long term implications increasingly important.
We should be able to recognize AI's enormous potential while still taking legitimate safety concerns seriously.
I'm curious where other entrepreneurs and business leaders stand on this.
Should advanced AI development face stricter oversight, or would that risk slowing down valuable innovation?
