As a working mom, I would hand my grocery run to an AI agent tomorrow. My mental load is mostly a running list of things that need to show up at my door: pouches, chicken nuggets, snacks he will actually eat and of course all the many berries.
So when Walmart announced Agent Gateway this week, I didn't see a tech story, I saw my Tuesday night.
Walmart is letting outside AI agents search its catalog and buy for customers. Next month, Agent Profiles will let me set spending limits and approvals. Amazon is going the other way and blocking them.
As someone who works at the intersection of media, commerce and brand here is what I am asking:
Who are we marketing to? If an agent does my shopping, a sponsored search never reaches me. Retail media is built to influence human scrolling a page. Where do the dollars go?
Does brand survive the handoff? I’d tell my agent to “get the snacks he likes.” Brand loyalty will only carry over if shows up in the signals an agent can read.
Will I trust it? I’d only delegate with limits and approvals, but yeah I would test it out.
Brands that treat agents as a new audience, not a new channel will be ready first.
What would it take for you to hand off your grocery run? At the very least the Agent Gateway will allow for a better OpenAI experience in the discovery phase.
