Greg Brockman says 300 million people ask ChatGPT health questions every single week.
I'm one of them. I've also heard of people uploading ten years of bloodwork into AI, and people who refuse to share a single symptom.
Wherever you land, I think it helps to know what actually happens to that data once you hit enter. So I broke down the 7 risks I see, from hacked servers to your chats showing up in a legal case, with my personal worry level for each (gut-check levels, not measured probabilities).
A few that might surprise you:
- Health chats with consumer chatbots generally aren't covered by HIPAA.
- "Private" doesn't automatically mean legally privileged.
- Depending on the product, your employer may be able to see what you ask your work AI.
I still use AI for health stuff (second opinions, prepping questions for my doctor, decoding medical jargon). I just want you going in with your eyes open.
If someone in your life has pasted their lab results into ChatGPT, this might be a good one to send them.
