A HABIT THAT HELPS ME “LIVE IN THE FUTURE”

A senior leader once told me I had foresight when it came to navigating my career. The explanation is quite simple: I’m curious about the future, so I keep finding places to explore that curiosity.

This year, I’ve regularly watched livestreams of major tech conferences from AWS and AI Engineer. I also read new research from tech companies and think about how work might change.

For example, Anthropic’s recent employment report has two findings I find interesting:

1. Human attention has become a bottleneck at Anthropic. Employees are building tools to manage agent output and monitor workflows.

2. In technical hiring at Anthropic, assessments increasingly emphasize autonomy and judgment, with less relative attention to domain expertise and execution.

These connect with the talks at AI Engineer New York 2026 this October. Scaling agents requires several layers: connections to data and tools, Agent Skills, identities and permissions, sandboxes and approvals, and ongoing tracing and evaluation. As agents do more, we need to organize the work, set standards, and decide when to step in.

I already apply these principles in my own AI agent system. Agents advise and check one another’s work to reduce how often I need to intervene. Building it has also helped me see how my background in entrepreneurship, learning design, marketing, and adtech gives me more perspectives and room for creativity when designing workflows.

A couple of practical suggestions:

- If you’re early in your career or doing an internship, try building AI workflows for small problems alongside experienced colleagues. Learn about the related domains, how your colleagues make decisions, and how to turn quality criteria into checks. These are opportunities to develop your judgment.

- For employers, Anthropic recommends helping employees move into new roles as their work changes. I see opportunities here to bring their experience into AI workflows that span several areas of expertise.
