Sephora in ChatGPT. Ulta with Google, and suddenly, AI search is a retail strategy.
Funny how quickly the conversation changes when the industry’s biggest players start making moves. 😉
BeautyScale’s latest analysis of Sephora’s #ChatGPT integration reinforces something I’ve been saying for quite some time: the future of beauty commerce is being shaped at the point of discovery, not just the point of purchase.
For years, retailers controlled the storefront, brands competed for shelf space, and search engines determined visibility.
However, now consumers can describe their skin concerns, preferences, budgets and desired results in a single conversation, receiving a handful of contextualized recommendations instead of hundreds of listings. This isn’t just a better search bar. It’s a fundamental shift in who influences the consumer’s consideration set!
And here’s what I’ve been emphasizing about AI search, AEO and the future of commerce:
1. AI search is becoming a distribution channel. Retailers are realizing discovery doesn’t have to begin on their websites. They need to meet consumers where purchase intent is forming.
2. Product data is becoming a competitive advantage. Strong marketing alone won’t guarantee an AI recommendation. Brands need structured information, credible validation and enough context for AI to understand who a product is right for and why.
3. Visibility isn’t the same as recommendation. Being recognized by AI doesn’t mean being selected. When thousands of products become three recommendations, relevance and differentiation matter enormously.
4. Independent brands face both opportunity and risk. AI could democratize discovery, but if recommendations favor brands with the largest digital footprints, we’re recreating traditional retail gatekeeping through algorithms.
This is precisely why I’m building #SearchBeauteAI an AI-native commerce engine for all things beauty, where discovery prioritizes consumer intent, individual preferences and deeper product understanding.
Here’s an important distinction: General-purpose AI can help consumers shop. Vertical AI can go deeper into the nuances of how consumers shop within a particular category. Remember, #Beauty isn’t one-size-fits-all, and a popular product isn’t necessarily always the right product.
My POV: The next battle in beauty isn’t just about winning the sale. It’s about earning a place in the answer. The industry spent years mastering SEO to win traffic. Now it needs to understand AEO to earn consideration. As #AI becomes the starting point of the shopping journey, being discoverable is no longer enough. You need to be understood well enough to be recommended. And it’s encouraging to see the industry finally catching up to that conversation.
