You know how it goes: you attend an Amazon event, somewhere like London, then afterwards you head over to Amsterdam to meet up with some friends and brand owners…
Then you carve out a little time to yourself, take in some Van Gogh paintings, and casually bump into Bill Murray for an impromptu discussion of the Wheatfield with Crows painting.
We’ve all been there!
A solid reminder to take a break once in a while, look up, and see who’s around to connect with. You never know who you'll find.
The best part is he suggested we have Van Goghs Irises in the background, although it looks like I missed the top of it.
I didn't get the chance to ask Bill if he remembers my dad’s glowing 1979 review of his comedy work, like the movie Meatballs.. but there's always tomorrow.
My dad, Bruce McCabe, was a film critic for the Boston Globe who covered early Murray films and spent years lamenting that subsequent imitators fell entirely short, calling out the flood of low-brow comedies that confused vulgarity with humor.
Turns out some of the older comedies (and the man himself) still hold up.
When Caddyshack first arrived, it was actually panned by many establishment critics who found it messy and disjointed. McCabe, however, leaned into the chaos. We McCabes sometimes do that…
He particularly enjoyed how Murray’s unhinged groundskeeper, Carl Spackler, completely stole scenes through sheer, unpredictable improvisation. Can't live life from a script, right?
Ultimately, McCabe saw both films as vehicles that proved Murray didn't need an airtight script to command a movie, he just needed a camera and room to play.
We should all take Bill's example to make magic happen.
Never skip the museum break, or discovering new places and people.
